Wednesday is #MangroveDay. Why do we need to protect mangroves? Mangroves mitigate climate change, advance food security, protect from storms, tsunamis and sea level rise, prevent shoreline erosion, and regulate coastal water quality. Mangrove ecosystems provide benefits and services that are essential for life and the health of our planet. Regram: @unesco #GlobalGoals

"You have the fantastic capacity to make us dream," #UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres told UN Messenger of Peace @LangLangPiano at their first meeting on Tuesday. View of the UN Conference Building on the East River out of a window at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Built between 1949 and 1952, the landmark UN Headquarters in #NYC set standards as a unique example of modernist, international-style #architecture. A five-year renovation was completed in 2013 to make the building a safer, more sustainable workplace while restoring its character-defining architectural features. The architects of the UN believed that modernism transcended national and cultural differences and they were determined to demonstrate this to the world by conceiving together "a workshop for peace," an expression often used by the team's leader, Wallace Harrison. 📷: UN Social Media / Mai Thy Nguyen #globalgoals
Continued violence and insecurity has left more than half of South Sudan's population in need of food aid. A third of its population is displaced and half of those people have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. The @unpeacekeeping mission is providing protection, shelter and food to thousands of internally displaced persons on its compound and is working with the community to maintain law and order, provide health care support and more. This photo was taken last month in one of these Protection of Civilians sites, in Juba. 📷: UNMISS #InvestingInPeace #SouthSudan #UnitedNations
Lake Tanganyika is Africa's oldest and deepest lake. It holds 17% of the whole world’s freshwater. Across the four bordering countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Zambia) over 10 million people depend on the lake as a source of income. However, recent outbreaks of violence in the region and widespread poverty have driven people towards unsustainable agricultural and fishing practices, as well as deforestation. As a result, fish stock and the regions’ rich biodiversity are in danger. That’s why we help to spread environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, plant trees, introduce energy efficient stoves, and create environmentally-friendly jobs. Regram @UNDP #globalgoals
⚓️ Once one of the four largest lakes in the world, the Aral Sea was slowly but surely becoming a desert. 20 years after the #UnitedNations Development Programmes's first intervention in the region, it's the Aral Sea’s time to shine again. Side by side with the locals, UNDP has been working in the region to help forests re-grow, to ‘green’ villages, to introduce new crops that require less water and to rebuild conditions so that local species can thrive again. Now, 8,000 tonnes of fish can be caught giving a much needed boost to the local economy. Also, the local community regained its trust in the potential of the area and joined forces to make a difference, raising funds worth $1.5 mil., founding 23 new NGOs to address socio-economic and environmental issues, and attending training workshops and seminars to improve their business planning skills. Sky Waves, or altocumulus asperitas mamma, by Arvydas Latvis, the July photo in the World Meteorological Organization's calendar. WMO's International Cloud Atlas this year recognized asperitas as a new classification - a move that was welcomed by cloud lovers around the world. The Cloud Atlas has its roots in the 19th century and was last updated in 1987 before WMO's recent major revision into a now user-friendly, digital-based product. Children around the 🌍 who receive @worldfoodprogramme_official #SchoolMeals have been getting creative to show what #ZeroHunger means to them. This artwork was created by Sohaimen M. Birol, a 13-year-old boy from the #Philippines who thinks nutritious food should be on every family’s table, so that children can achieve their career dreams. He is one of 20 winners from around the world who will receive a cash prize for themselves and one for their schools, to be spent on stationery. Every day, countless children across the globe turn up for school on an empty stomach, which makes it hard to focus on lessons. Many simply do not go, as their families need them to help in the fields or around the house. For all of them, a daily school meal provided by #WFP and thanks to donors can mean not only better nutrition and health, but also increased access to and achievement in education. It is also a strong incentive to consistently send children to school. #globalgoals #drawing #art
Why do we need more women in peacekeeping operations? Today women represent only 6% of deployed #UnitedNations peacekeepers in the positions of staff officers and military observers. Women peacekeepers can empower women in the host communities, interview survivors of gender-based violence, strengthen the situational awareness of the mission by interacting with women in societies where women are prohibited from speaking to men, and assist female ex-combatants during the process of reintegration into civilian life. #FBF to February 1964: The #UnitedNations was originally founded by 51 countries in 1945. By 1964, the UN was expanding so fast that there were not enough seats in the General Assembly hall. This photo shows construction workers reconfiguring the layout to make extra room. Today the UN has 193 Member States. Each Member State has one vote in the General Assembly. 📷: UN Photo / Teddy Chen #FlashbackFriday
Elisa, a strong woman and mother, used to work in the local church’s Sunday school in her home country, #SouthSudan. She fled with her children after her husband was killed, leaving the family farm behind. She has lived in Kakuma refugee camp in #Kenya since 2012, where she has made a new home, and her children are now in school. Summer is here! In Zaatari Refugee Camp in #Jordan children are out and playing as schools are off. There are close to 27,000 children of school age in Zaatari camp. @UNICEF has established 14 school complexes to ensure a seat for every child. Opened in 2012, Zaatari refugee camp is the largest camp for Syrian #refugees in Jordan. Since its opening, Zaatari has evolved from a collection of tents into a structured settlement providing temporary home to 80,000 women, children and men. This week, #UnitedNations Messenger of Peace Malala visited girls at a #UNICEF supported school for children displaced by the Boko Haram crisis in northeast #Nigeria. “Studies are clear — educating girls grows economies, reduces conflict and improves public health. For these girls and for their country’s future, Nigeria’s leaders must immediately prioritise education,” said Malala. Our colleagues from UNICEF are working closely with the government and partners to put children back into learning environments. More than 525,000 have been enrolled in school this year alone, over 37 temporary learning spaces established, and almost 92,000 packs of learning material distributed to help children continue their education. “I want to be educated so that I can give my baby a better future.” In South Sudan, this refugee mother continues to pursue her dreams. Intisar is committed to her education and would like to become a pediatrician one day. As instability and violence in South Sudan continue, those who have fled urgently need protection, shelter and medical care. #UNHCR, the #UnitedNations Refugee Agency is striving to restore hope to thousands who have been uprooted. "The best tribute we can pay this great man is not words or in ceremonies, but actions that improve our world." -- #UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres on #MandelaDay. From Brazil to the the Philippines to Tunisia to South Africa, UN staff joined people around the world on Tuesday's Nelson Mandela International Day by devoting their time to help others. In NYC, UN volunteers helped keep New York's harbour healthy and resilient by cleaning its shorelines of litter and invasive plants, and learnt about the importance of urban farming in raising awareness about nutritious food for all communities (pictured). 📷: UN Social Media Team #MandelaDay #GlobalGoals #Time2Serve

"Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom." -- Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela, who would have been 99 years old today, was a guiding light for people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. At great personal sacrifice, he spent 67 years in the service of humanity - as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. On Tuesday's #MandelaDay, join people around the world and devote at least 67 minutes of your time to take action against poverty and inspire change. 📷: Nelson Mandela Foundation / Alet van Huyssteen #NelsonMandela #Time2Serve #globalgoals
