"We are here to serve: to relieve the suffering of “we the peoples”; and to help fulfil their dreams. We come from different corners of the world. Our cultures, religions, traditions vary widely -- and wonderfully. At times, there are competing interests among us. At others, there is even open conflict. That is exactly why we need the United Nations. That is why multilateralism is more important than ever. We call ourselves the international community. We must act as one. Only together, as united nations, can we fulfil the promise of the Charter and advance human dignity for all." -- #UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres at the opening of the General Assembly annual debate. 📷: @sotonino / UN Social Media #UNGA

"I'm a young dad, but we're determined our kids will be schooled so they can make better choices," says Nou Nalam (19) of the Tumpuon ethnic group in far northeastern #Cambodia. With @unfpa support, government efforts to ensure information and vital sexual and reproductive health services to far flung indigenous communities are improving, but more work is needed. Tete is only six and she's a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In August, she spent her last few days at Mussungue reception centre before being relocated to a new home in the Lóvua settlement in northern #Angola. The new Lóvua settlement has been established to improve living conditions for #refugees who have been receiving basic humanitarian assistance, since the Cacanda and Mussungue centres are currently over-crowded as thousands of Congolese are forced to flee violence and ethnic tensions in the Kasai region of the DRC. Every day, #UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, saves lives and builds better futures for those forced to leave their homes. Regram: @refugees 📷:: UNHCR / Rui Padilha #WithRefugees #GlobalGoals
Zakia is a symbol of hope for girls in #Somalia. For many girls in that country, the months of July, August and September are something of a “cutting season”. The break from school means they have time to undergo and recover from female genital mutilation ( #FGM). Together with other brave young men and women, Zakia is working to end this practice. FGM was declared abandoned by around 3,000 communities in 2016. The #UnitedNations Population Fund ( #UNFPA), jointly with #UNICEF, leads the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of FGM. Regram: @unfpa 📷: UNFPA/Georgina Goodwin
#UnitedNations Messenger of Peace Jane Goodall ( @janegoodallinst) and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed marked this Friday the International #PeaceDay at UN Headquarters in #NYC. They joined the Secretary General, António Guterres, in the annual ringing of the peace bell and calls for combatants worldwide to lay down their arms and observe a day of ceasefire and non-violence. This year’s ceremony was dedicated to the more than 65 million people forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. As a Messenger of Peace since 2002 and pioneer in the study of chimpanzees, Jane Goodall helps the United Nations focus attention on environmental issues. 📷: UN Photo/Kim Haughton #PeaceDay #GlobalGoals #JoinTogether
Freedom Human rights Free & fair elections These are all essential elements of democracy. Friday is International #DemocracyDay. Democracy contributes to peaceful and stable societies, and allows people to have a say in decisions affecting their lives. Don't forget to exercise your democratic right to elect leaders and officials where you live! 📷: Polling staff outside their voting station in Khartoum, #Sudan, on the first day of the country's general elections in 2010 (UN Photo / Mohamed Siddig)

On Wednesday, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the historic #UnitedNations Declaration on the Rights of #IndigenousPeoples, which set standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the 370 million indigenous peoples around the world. Despite major progress, these indigenous communities continue to face exclusion, marginalization and challenges to their right to self-determination, traditional lands, education and more. "I think that teaching someone to be literate is a greater service to humanity." The Citizens Foundation, a literacy programme with an online platform for women and out-of-school girls in #Pakistan, has been awarded the 2017 #UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy. Created in 1995, the Foundation has since generated positive social change in the country by building and managing schools. Today, it runs 1,441 school units in over 100 of the poorest slums and villages across Pakistan. In 2016 alone, the programme enrolled 14,020 girls and women with a completion rate of 77%. Hurricane #Irma: Right now, children and families are relying on the World Food Programme (WFP) for food for survival, which is often the most urgent need in these types of emergencies. #WFP is already airlifting High Energy Biscuits to #Haiti -- quick solutions to hunger that can save a child’s life. These biscuits are enough to feed 80,000 people for 4 days. WFP teams have also been strategically moving food within Haiti so that they can quickly and efficiently reach those most affected by this storm. But our WFP colleagues couldn’t carry out this type of work without the support of compassionate people because their work is 100% voluntarily funded. You can make an emergency donation right now and help WFP get immediate food assistance to those most in need: ow.ly/tRPo30cpXhN Regram: @worldfoodprogramme_official / 📷: WFP / Thomas Freteur
