CLARIFY // With only a few weeks left until 2018, business owners and entrepreneurs are revving up for 1st of the year launches, Black Friday sales, and new year / new opportunities. Because it’s the holidays and money can be limited, you might be tempted to save money and rush just to put something out there. Let me clarify some things about web design though:
1) ANYONE CAN DESIGN A WEBSITE. I heard someone say that a 5th grader could manage WordPress (my web design platform of choice) and I almost collapsed. Yes, a smart 5th grade visionary with marketing acumen could. Can I go into @mimigstyle
workshop and sew a whole dress just through sheer will? No. Could I do to @simonesstyles
and do a whole crochet braid install? No! So, without design experience, technical skills, and business knowledge you cannot design a website. Yes, you can “throw something up” but do you really want a haphazard website to represent your business?
2) YOU DON’T NEED ONE. If I wasn’t a Christian, I’d proverbially slap you. (J/k but this is #truthytuesday
and I serve up tough love). If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur and you don’t have a website, then you’re a hobbyist. Period. Your website is your personal online hub of activity. How can anyone take you seriously if your website is nonexistent or worse, broken and technically shaky? Come now, it’s about to be 2018. (Even my teenage daughter has a website for her makeup business @jayysvanity.
Granted, I designed it, but the point is a youngin’ has one). 3) A WEBSITE IS CHEAP. It depends on what you believe cheap is, your designer, and what your vision is. Your website is a big deal because it should contain all of the elements needed to sell your services and products online. The content should be well-designed, defined, branded, intentional, and professional. It’s hard to have these features be present on one platform without paying well for it. I know designers who charge $500 and others who charge $7,000. Is a one-page website $7k? No. But is a 5-page heavily designed, highly-functioning website $500? Heck to the no! Overall, like my mother used to say “you get what you pay for”, so decide for yourself if a cheap website.
