Got to review some shipping racks today!
What's pretty cool about racks is: we don't ever think about how product is delivered or material shipped - we just assume it all shows up. Racks are these beautifully underappreciated part of manufacturing. They're simple machines on their own. They clamp, the collapse, they're welded, they're galvanized, they're assembled, the whole 9 yards... Just to 'hold stuff' or 'ship stuff'. They hold and protect product for hundreds of miles and most of them are made out of steel!
How does something made out of steel protect and hold something in place?
(wait and you shall see)
Learning to design racks has been the most time consuming, most steep learning curve so far in my automotive manufacturing experience thus far. But boy had it been super cool and fun!
I mean, who else gets to nerd out over welds, review the manufacturing process, create mental failure modes, try to break stuff, account for misuse, AND get to throw in ideas for improvement!
Engineering is absolutely limitless and mechanical is a beast of a discipline with so many different avenues to explore!
