Sergeant Stubby was the most decorated dog of World War 1 and the only one to be promoted to the rank of sergeant through combat, serving the 102nd Infantry Regiment. He started out as just a mascot, having been smuggled to Europe by an American soldier, but by the end of his career was nothing short of a hero. Stubby was known to rescue wounded soldiers, warn his soldiers of incoming mustard gas attacks and even captured a German spy. He served for a total of 18 months and in 17 battles and had two wound stripes by the end of his service.
