No discussion of Switzerland would be complete without touching on their unique history of warfare.
Let's rewind to 1515 and the battle of Marignano, a battle that changed history. The Swiss had built themselves a reputation as one of the bad-boys of Europe, being unbeaten. Their technique was one of efficiency, tactical movement, and cleverness. By the time of this battle they had taken Milan, which the French weren't particularly pleased with.
The French declared war on the Swiss and started a war that everyone knew would only go one way. The Swiss attacked with their normal, clever, unbeaten tactics undermining the French in multiple ways. The French, however, had a much larger army, and the benefit of the newly created artillery. The smoke from the gunfire blocked out the moon. The Swiss made some great moves, but every attempt at a gain was just destroyed by the artillery fire.
The result was a decisive victory for the French; the unthinkable had happened. The Swiss had lost. This changed the future of Europe. It was shown that tactics could be beaten by pure firepower. It put France at the top of the European totem pole.
The Swiss made an official agreement with France to never attack them. In fact, from that point onwards, the Swiss never launched an offensive against any (external) power. The perpetual peace with France was only broken with the Napoleonic invasion.
Yet despite this, Switzerland still kept its reputation as the people to be feared. This victory was seen as the exception (shown by Europe's reaction to it). Swiss Mercenaries were used by basically every army in Europe; probably another reason why Switzerland wasn't attacked. This reputation even lasted through to WWI and WII where, even with fighting everywhere else on the continent, no one dared set foot over the Swiss border.
