A wee bit of Whanganui history today... Pictured here is the as-then-known Braeburn Hotel, around the time it opened on November 15th, 1915. Built in a prominent location at the base of Durie Hill and overlooking the river towards the city, the Hotel Braeburn was designed to be 'One of the finest Hotels in the [British] Dominion'.
This Category 2 listed Heritage building is built in the Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts Style, and according to the Wanganui Chronicle at the time, ".....many of the bedrooms have lavatories with hot and cold water, electric radiators and electric bells, while the whole building is lighted by electricity.." - so it was very high-end in the day :)
Although no longer operating as a Hotel, lovers of architecture can still easily admire this beautiful building as one strolls the walkways along side the Whanganui River. Being one of NZ's oldest cities, there is plenty of history and heritage buildings to be admired in our great little city - have a look-see: www.visitwhanganui.nz/whanganui-heritage/ #visitwhanganui
