In bangkok, there are several ways to get around Bangkok that i've tried and each conveyance presents a unique face of Thai's urban life.
1. BTS & MRT
Both are the first option for commuting in Bangkok. They are so efficient, clean, convenient, with a nice polite queuing system in place that it's always a pleasure to ride, i used it numerous times and it seems that i never wait longer than 5 minutes for a train. It's easy to follow the route, all signs are in Thai and English, maps are easy to use. No more hurdle on traveling.
2. Tuk Tuk
Tuk tuk is the most popular kind of transportation in Bangkok. There are so many tuk tuk on the road. Tuk tuk is a fun way to discover the city. Remember to negotiate the price with the driver before hoping in. You can at least negotiate price to half of what the driver says. And beware of scams that make you stop in shops for cheaper price.
3. Chao Phraya express boat
Why sit in traffic when you can hop on a boat? You can visit various places around chao phraya river. This is a really good way to see the parts of the city that is not reached by public transport. It is a memorable experience indeed.
Same old issue about taxi drivers in Bangkok is that they are often refusing to use the meter and you always have to ask how much it will be before you enter the taxi. With the traffic, it usually need a lot of time to get somewhere. Beside that, i found that their English is very limited and that make it difficult. Carry a map or address written in Thai, it's helpful.
5. Public bus
There is a huge network of public buses in the city, but there is not much English language route information is available so i found it pretty difficult to figure out the route that i supposed to take. Most of the buses that i saw have old fashioned interior and have ceiling fans. The fare is collected by an attendant after you board, tell him where you're going and they'll quote the cost. After you paid, you'll get a tiny receipt. Make sure that you know the local names of places of your destination.
