As my kids get older I'm beginning to learn that being an affective parent is just as much about what I do, as what I don't do. โ € Recently, my eldest son forgot to do his homework. On a typical school night he often remembers he has homework and usually completes it before we sit down for dinner. But the weekends are a different story...homework is completely forgotten about unless there's a gentle reminder from Mom or Dad.โ € Well, this past weekend we didn't remind him, resulting in quite a panic on Monday morning when my son realized he hadn't completed his homework and might face staying in at recess to get it done. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ โ € In response to this, we had three options:โ € โ € 1. Lecture or punish him for not remembering his homework (not very effective at keeping open and honest communication, not to mention just making him feel even worse than he already did)โ € โ € 2. Write a note excusing him from his homework due to a very busy weekend (what my son wanted us to do)โ € โ € 3. Sympathize but otherwise, do nothing. โ € โ € We love our kids tremendously and it's so hard to see them upset or overwhelmed. Our gut instinct was to try and 'fix' this problem for him and write a little note to his teacher. But as parents we are training him to be a responsible adult who will live and thrive on his own one day. ๐Ÿ™ Fixing this problem, as minor as it seems now, would be setting an expectation, not preparing him to take responsibility for his actions.โ € โ € It can be hard to let our kids fail. But they'll never learn how to clean up their mess if we're always the one holding the mop.๐Ÿ’— โ € I'd love to hear what you think about this - do you let your kids fail?โ € -โ € #snaphappyottawa #lifewithkids #parenting #parentingtips #motherhoodunplugged #ottawaparents #todaysparents
Baby sign language is the perfect translator Baby- Parents. Let's face it. It can be quite difficult to understand what our little ones want or need. with baby sign language you won't guess, you will know. And that makes all the difference! . . . . Between the ages of 12 months old to 2.5 years old my son would not cry when he wanted or needed something. He would sign to me. He hardly ever throw tantrums. It was fantastic. โ € Now my son is 4 years old, speaks 4 languages and we have the best relationship a mother could ask for! .โ € .โ € .โ € .โ € Follow & Tag #mamoonabsl โ € @mamoonabslโ € .โ € .โ € #mamoonabsl #babysigning #family #parenting #unitedinmotherhood #mommylife, #motherhoodsimplified, #dailyparenting, #parenthood #momlife #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #educationalactivities, #developingthewholechild #parents #parentslife #love #familyfirst #babysignlanguage #honestlyparents #motherhood #maternity #mothers #moms #realparenthood #todaysparents #mommylove #honestmotherhood #followme
