HTC's Best Business Move In 6 Years Will Foster Elite New Smartphones
Seven years ago HTC outsmarted other consumer electronics developers by inventing a touchscreen phone that could get on the Internet. That leadership in what became known as the smartphone peaked a year later when HTC took a 10.7% world market share. But the Taiwanese firm's share has slid since then from the top of its game to something around a 1% market share now because of tough competition, marketing problems and a lack of sales channels in major markets.
But the 20-year-old developer had been working all along with Google, which took a shine to HTC's ability to engineer solid hardware for phones. Google wants to add hardware to software now for maximum growth of its Android operating system. Their partnership led Thursday to HTC’s smartest smartphone move in more than half a decade: selling 2,000 of its best trained smartphone unit staff people to Google for $1.1 billion effective next year. The dealincludes Google’s non-exclusive access to HTC intellectual property, too.
