. .. ... .. .
I grew up in a world where no matter what women wore on the streets or at home, they wore sarees to church on Sunday. And weddings, and feast days and funerals. I also grew up in a world that only knew two types of handloom: Mysore silks for Sundays, and the prized Kanjeevarams for weddings and feast days. In between, was a mangled assortment of floral chiffons (dresses and sarees), unknown and unnamed cottons, machine silks, and a whole lot of synthetics with names that sounded like they belonged in the choir (including a poly, a Terry, and an Esther), and not around the sweaty swarths of Mangalorean belles (pun unintended). Like Funny Boy's Arjie, some of my fondest memories of childhood involve me sitting on my mother's bed, and marveling at how a rectangularish head of folded cloth turned my mother from mummy to Mrs Fernandes (this has something to do with the fact that my ordinarily make-up phobic mother would dab on a little liftik before important bank meetings and parties which she attended and hosted as the boss' wife, Mrs Fernandes).the mind boggling feat of folding yards of fabric between the thumb and middle finger, over the outstretched pointer of the left hand until they formed an elegant fan running from exactly two fingers below her navel, to hang dangerously close to the ground, dancing between her ankles as she walked. Sometimes, she'd turn around and say, "Just come and adjust these damn pleats, men!", and I'd grateful scurry off the bed, to hold the bottom of her pleats and align them till she smiled down approvingly.
