1944 13th February, Alexandria, Egypt - Pvt. Wojtek boards M.S. Batory, bound for Italy. [Wojtek is seen to be fully integrated within the military family]
1944 Monte Cassino, 1945 Bologna - Pvt. Wojtek achieves legendary status. [Wojtek is seen to be carrying heavy ammunition to the artillery guns]
1946 Winfield Displaced Persons Camp at Sunwick Farm, Hutton, Berwickshire, Scottish Borders. [Wojtek is seen to be increasingly weary from his years of dutiful service]
1947 - Wojtek remained at Edinburgh Zoo until his death in 1963, aged 22. “HIS LEGEND LIVES ON” [Wojtek seen proud but elderly, living out his final years]
This is a beautiful visual timeline of Wojtek’s life, travelling through his most iconic moments. Wojtek’s story is like no other, a mix of playfulness and strong bravery. His bond with humanity is one that cannot be conveyed with words. Certainly, his memory lives on!
