This post from @phillearney really hit home for me. When I started training, that's all I was, a trainer. . . Over the past 10 years, I've dedicated myself to learning how to be a good coach. I realize that no coach will ever get 100% compliance, and that factors outside the gym matter as much or more than the exercises being done in it. Diets don't work but a good sustainable diet does. . . . Stress, travel, work, family circumstances, and past successes and failures all play a role. . . My goal as a coach is to constantly be aware of these factors and work to help build up the total person, not just their one rep max or lower their body fat percentage. . . I am a member of a team, not a dictator of health. Client Success Story: . . Max started training just 6 weeks ago. He came in suffering from chronic back pain and was fairly de-conditioned/weak. To summarize, his goals were to gain strength and muscle size (hypertrophy). . . During our first day of upper body training he finished his last set of Overhead DB presses with 10lb Dumbbells. Today Max pressed 30lb Dumbbells for 2 sets - WOAH! . . I'll skip to the point, the answer is NO. . . The sedentary lifestyle brought on by all this technology that is supposed to make our lives better has actually done the opposite. . . Increasing evidence shows kids are more stressed, eat worse, and move less than ever. My generation is the first to have a shorter life expectancy than our parents. More chronic illnesses, more cancer, more bad news. . It does not have to be this way. Early in life parents are the biggest influence on what their children eat, and how much movement they get daily. It is up to families to provide an example of what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, and that all starts with us. . Do you suffer from back pain? Lots of people do, myself included. . . Should you be lifting heavy weights? - Maybe that's not where you start but, yes you should. Strengthening your low back and your entire body is the best way to relieve your pain. . . At age 20 I suffered an injury that left me dragging a leg when I walked, frequent back spasms, poor quality sleep, and chronic pain. With the help of a chiropractor, a new mattress, and intelligent training, I'm now the strongest I've ever been at age 31. . . I've deadlifted (Trap Bar) 2.5x my body-weight for multiple reps. I bench pressed 100lbs over my body-weight. And I've squated 2x my body-weight. . . This is not to meant to impress you but to impress upon you that strength is the answer to many of your pain related issues. . . Yes there are days when my back hurts, usually from too much sitting and rarely from lifting. . An intelligent approach to strength training can bring back capabilities you once enjoyed or even bring about new ones. Educate yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help. I love #throwbackthursday ❤ •.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.• This was my first physique competition. It really wasn't that bad & I learned a lot. I was warned about the "rebound." Just bc we are warned about repercussions doesn't mean we always follow through as one should. So in short, yes I rebounded. I gained back all of the weight I had lost & then some. 🙄 •.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.• You've heard all of these stories before. Weight loss, regained, the cycle repeats. However, here is what I did learn. 1. I like eating multiple small meals a day (it works for me) 🍳🥗🍗🍎🍌🥑🌮🍣🍩 2. I love lifting. 💪🏼 3. I dislike cardio on machines (shoot me) 4. Diets aren't bad but they aren't all sustainable. Nothing is the "end all be all." More than anything we should learn about how our bodies respond to certain diets & incorporate or remove things to feel our best. 5. Goals take time. Do it for you & no one else.❤ 6. Having my body critiqued by anyone is BS & I'm through with that noise. 👋🏼 •.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.• Ps This hair was FN epic! & my 🍑 has only gotten better with age. 👊🏼

I haven't been real pleased with my progress in the Front Squat, especially compared to other lifts. Another great tip for keeping your shoulders healthy in overhead movements......... . Mix in variations that force you to use lighter loads. As an example here is a Kneeling Arnold Press done with DBs that are 10-20lbs lighter than I would use standing or seated. Maybe your warm up or lack of warm up is to blame. ________________________________________________ Try these variations before your next Overhead Pressing Workout. . . 1. Band Pull Aparts - concentrate on squeezing your shoulder blades back and down to create the movement. I prefer hitting at least a couple different angles and hand positions. (5-10reps per angle) . 2. Wall Walk Ups - Abs tight throughout (2-5 Reps will be enough) . 3. Light Overhead Pressing with Snatch/Clean/Normal/Narrow grip (5-10reps per) ________________________________________________ The most important part of warming up the shoulders is mixing up the angles and intensity. . Accountability: Megan needed something to eat. She told me she would be going out to dinner this evening. As we all know, most restaurant food tends to be a littler higher in calories than the meals we make at home. . . I did not tell her what to eat. I merely suggested she asses the situation and try to choose wisely and then send me a photo of what she decided on. --> Well Done Megan! . She grabbed a lower calorie option for her post workout meal which will allow her to enjoy her dinner out this evening without the worry of excess calories ruining her hard earned progress.
