Manipulation of tempo is an often overlooked variable in weightlifting and it can greatly affect the outcome of the exercise on our body. For example, slow controlled reps, with a long eccentric phase will typically elicit hypertrophy due to the increased time under tension. A fast, powerful concentric phase will develop strength and power more readily. Another way to vary tempo is to use paused reps. These are great for developing strength as the short pause allows for elastic energy to dissipate, forcing you to use pure strength to get the weight back up. In short, remember to consider the tempo you lift at when deciding your gym goals. .

I try to focus training on how it will help me perform on the pitch. I've said it before but in a game if you take a big hit and end up on the deck it's on you to get back up and get back into it. Steady state aerobic training is almost forgotten in rugby circles, with anaerobic training HIIT being the flavour of the year. However, there are a number of good reasons to keep working at your aerobic base. . 1. Aerobic capacity is much more trainable than anaerobic capacity. Studies have shown that 30% of your aerobic ability is down to your parents, where as much as 80% of your anaerobic ability is inherited. It makes a lot more sense, therefore, to focus on the more trainable attribute. . 2. Higher aerobic capacity will increase your ability to metabolise lactic acid, leading to quicker recovery times during and after the match. . Aerobic training is much more easy to incorporate into your program. Anaerobic training is stressful on the body and requires a longer rest before and after the session. Aerobic training is much less taxing and can be more easily fit around heavy strength and power work.
