Technology and the fire ground!
During the 2-alarm fire at ALCO Iron & Metals on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office UAV (drone) was used to check the smoke plume with one of the ACFD HazMat monitors to determine which gases were present. (The monitor is the box suspended beneath the drone.) The HazMat monitor identified the general presence of carbon monoxide (CO) and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The representative from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District who responded to the incident was also provided the data to analyze with their air samplings. To our knowledge, this is the first time this technology has been paired together during an emergency.
