What will happen when #nationalpark
entrance fees are raised to $70 from $30? A majority of #americans
will no longer be able to visit these beautiful treasure troves of biological diversity and breathtaking landscapes. This detachment will condition an entire generation to lose interest in wildlife conservation and the preservation of or wild spaces. When our National Parks become an exclusive country club for the rich, how can we expect the average citizen to care about the protection of an ecosystem they cannot afford to visit? And maybe this is what Trump's Department of the Interior wants; a disconnect from nature, and overwhelming apathy that will usher in a new era of resource extraction on these sacred and once untouchable lands. The founder of the #NPS, #theodoreroosevelt
had this to say about America's fledgling environmental conscience, "There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children's children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred." This perpetual preservation is impossible when lower income citizens cannot afford to take in the splendor of these vast expanses of wilderness. #ourwild
is already an unlevel playing field for those lacking transportation, the dispensable income to invest in gear, and fear of racial/gender discrimination. This entrance fee increase is not only another obstacle, it might be THE OBSTACLE that diminishes the diversity of nature enthusiasts and #outdoorculture.
Let's vote to get elistism the fuck out of wildness culture by summiting a comment to the NPS through REI's comment page.

on its most popular trail #angelslanding
on a Saturday at 2pm during peak season. And yeah it was rough climb when you're easily surrounded by 20+ people in a 2 foot radius, but that did not detract from my ecstasy when I finally stepped onto the summit. And along the way I saw strangers lending each other a hand, advice, and encouragement. #resist
