A subject that is v close to my heart. This piece is talking about Forced Adoption Practices in 20th Century Australia. In the 1970's in Oz (and elsewhere) the widespread societal disapproval and stigma associated with a pregnancy out of wedlock was still v much alive and well, with the overriding message being that these young women, my mother included, had committed a terrible sin about which they should feel ashamed, and therefore unworthy, of their child. Coercive and bullying tactics employed by social workers, doctors, nurses, and religious figures, combined with the constant message that a married couple would be far more capable of providing a child with a better life, led to the widespread practice of 'forced adoption.' Since the late 1980's, there have been several enquiries into adoption practices in Oz, which ultimately led to an apology by the Federal Govt on the 21st of March, 2013. Unlike so many of her peers, my mother Wendy was one of the lucky ones, and got to keep me. This piece is for her ❤️.
