!! Emergency Recall:
I’ve shown a little bit of us practicing our emergency recall command with Kiba, and wrote a little on our IG stories. Since we received a lot of questions asking about it and how we trained Kiba, we decided to elaborate on it a little more. .
The emergency recall command means your pup comes NO MATTER WHAT, which is important in case your dog ever engages with an aggressive dog, darts into oncoming cars, or takes off after an animal unexpectedly. This is a MUST LEARN, potentially life-saving command if you ever take your dog off-leash - especially if you plan to take them hiking as we plan to do with Kiba. .
It’s really simple to teach! First, choose a command - a word/phrase that you would rarely say in normal conversation (because this should only to be used in emergency, and should not be confused with the normal recall). Our command is “Kelly Clarkson” lmao. .
Next, say the command repeatedly and get your dog to come to you. When he comes, click/praise and reward with a very high value treat. We did it with small pieces of bacon, or sweet potato (Kiba loves it). And then let your pup continue doing whatever it was doing before. Don’t detain your dog for additional training after that. The point is, whenever he hears the command, he ALWAYS gets an awesome praise and reward, no strings attached. That way, he always comes to you! .
We began practicing 2-3x a day for about a week, then phased it out to once a day... Now we’re doing it every other day, and are planning to phase it out to 1x week, biweekly, then monthly. Practice it in different rooms and environments, with and without distractions. I promise your pup will pick it up right away!
Kiba has taken to it very well! He has woken up from naps to come to us, has done it while being distracted.
