Belief bomb: spine must be held erect for physiological and neuroanatomical changes to occur for meditation to be *more* effective. Simply going within and quieting the mind is a powerful practice in itself, whether lying on the back, propped against a wall, in chair, or even walking. But when the body is positioned in a way that it is fully supported by the skeletal structure itself, the spring-like spine can rise up out of the base of the pelvis like a plant growing towards the light, where it blossoms into the flower of the brain. Gravity is directed through this central canal with conscious attention. Most of our day is spent as victims of gravity. Our bodies are literally dense. Yet consciousness itself, our attention, is so subtle, that perhaps it is beyond the affects of gravity. I do not know, but again this is a #beliefbomb
so here is my theory about it. Hopefully someone tells me I’m wrong and we can reach a higher truth. What if gravity is directed somehow upward, by arranging a structure with our body that is naturally supported? Why is it that #padmasana
or the full lotus position is a classic yoga and meditation posture, seen even in ancient drawings of humans? This posture, and any other full established seat where the hips establish a heavy groundedness so that tension around the spine can melt away and it can rise into a naturally erect and vibrant position, can perhaps allow the natural physics of our Universe to flow in a different way. Maybe. At least from a tangible, scientific angle we can look at how the spine, in a naturally erect state without support, requires as little outward attention as possible to maintain, which means the motor cortex or action brain ( #pingala
for us yogis) is not overactive. Makes sense, right? Thus, the sensory brain ( #ida)
is more receptive and open to ‘downloading’ input from the environment, because we are no longer ‘getting in the way’ with our mind! What is the environment whispering to us through these subtle channels? What message does our body have for us, once it has experienced this deeper connection to the Universe itself? We can only find out by getting enough of our ‘self’ out of the way....
