This is my favourite pic after Spine Reconstruction it was a proud moment to show boy what can be done I haven't surfed for 1 1/2 years but can stand up and paddle in the flat water. I could probably go for a surf but this thing called brain worries that it will happen again it more then likely won't but it stops me from having a go. I have Carpal Tunnel surgery in a month or 2 as the nerve sheaths are collapsing going into my hands. On My first day back from vacation 🏝 I was lucky to help with the practical exams at my old graduate school, and found something amazing: ➡️ The ☝️ first year students performed mostly incredible (with some nervousness). ➡️The final year students, although very knowledgeable, performed mostly at a Lower level (with a hint of brashness). . How does this happen after an extra THREE years of graduate education⁉️ . I think this above chart demonstrating the 'Dunning-Kruger' effect shows this nicely. As you progress in any profession or skill, you run into similar hurdles: 1️⃣You start with no confidence, you know nothing 2️⃣You rapidly gain knowledge in a narrow region of your profession. This is easy 😏. I don't need mentors 3️⃣You get some reps in a given career. You mess up. You fail. You realize you know 5%. 4️⃣You gain experience, gain mentors, grind and work toward being a master over YEARS. . Its hard to get around this pathway. But it's important to realize when you're finishing school or starting off..it's the most crucial time to keep learning 📝 . @stefanduell - THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME SERIES 1/9: Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) and Self-Treatment . TOS are a group of syndromes involving pressure on the brachial plexus. Each syndrome is named according the structure that is causing the compression. . 1️⃣SCALENE ANTERIOR SYNDROME: The fibres of the brachial plexus must pass through a narrow aperture between scalenes anterior and medius. Any increased tone in one of these muscles (usually anterior), will provide enough compression to produce symptoms. Scarring and adhesions from injuries can be causes of compression, particularly if found at the attachments of the scalenes. Dysfunction or misalignent of the cervical spine may also be a contributing factor to this syndrome. . 2️⃣PECTORALIS MINOR SYNDROME (HYPERABDUCTION SYNDROME): In this case, the compression occurs where the neurovascular bundle passes between the tendon of pectoralis minor and the coracoid process of the scapula. Tractioning is greatest with the arm in abduction, but even with the arm dependent, enough pressure from postural problems or tight pectoralis muscles can cause symptoms. . 3️⃣⃣COSTOCLAVICULAR SYNDROME: Symptoms result in this case when the neurovascular bundle is tractioned between the clavicle and the first rib. This is often bilateral, indicating a symmetrical postural cause. . CAUSES: Crutch use; Joint subluxation; Adhesions and scarring; Muscular hypertonicity from postural dysfunction such as hyperkyphosis; Trigger points; Occupational stresses; Emotion stresses; All of which lead to shallow breathing and poor sleeping posture. . SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: All thoracic outlet syndromes feature paraesthesia in the arm, forearm, hand, and fingers. Symptoms are usually unilateral, but can be bilateral, particularly if postural dysfunction is a main cause. Anterior scalene syndrome is also noted for edema in the hands and fingers. . Nervous System Mobilization ---------- In this video, I have demonstrated three mobilization positions for the sciatic, median and ulnar nerves (I had to leave radial nerve off due to video link-let me know if you are interested in this one). . For each nerve, there is a 'tensioner' position where the nerve is put on tension across it's entire path. In this position, you will likely experience a neural 'stretch', which feels different than a muscle stretch. Tensioners can be held for several seconds and are usually the first line of defense unless the person's pain is too severe. . In cases where tensioners cannot be tolerated, start with sliders. Sliders involve placing one end of the nerve on tension while the other end is slack. In the sciatic nerve, for example, when the ankle is plantarflexed (nervous system on slack distally), the head lifts from the ground, which creates nervous system tension in the neck region. Then, the neck and ankle positions switch, which creates the sliding movement of the nerve. Try alternating back and forth 10-15 times and use the technique whenever you are experiencing nerve symptoms (pain, tingling, numbness). . Spesso quando hai mal di schiena ti consigliano di fare dei raggi o una risonanza magnetica per capire bene quale sia il problema. Ma, ha davvero senso farla? Il bulging (termine molto diffuso nei referti dei raggi/risonanza magnetica) è presente nel 50% dei soggetti over 40 SENZA DOLORE. Le protusioni sono presenti nel: - 30% degli over 40 SENZA DOLORE! - 40% degli over 60 SENZA DOLORE! - 45% degli over 80 SENZA DOLORE! Non c'è alcuna correlazione tra le immagini e il dolore. Most Common Injury in AFL (Australian Rules Football)⠀ ⠀ This is part 4 of our “Most Common Injuries” series. Today’s focus – AFL⠀ ⠀ An epidemiology study of professional AFL in Australia (Orchard & Seward, 2007) examined 4 full seasons of data on injuries, from 1997-2000.⠀ ⠀ They found that:⠀ ⠀ - the seasonal incidence of new injuries was 39 per club (of 40 players)⠀ ⠀ - the most common and prevalent injury was hamstring strain (six injuries per club per season, resulting in 21 missed matches per club per season)⠀ ⠀ - followed in prevalence by anterior cruciate ligament and groin injuries⠀ ⠀ How to reduce the incidence of hamstring strains??⠀ ⠀ - 🏉 have adequate flexibility and mobility, especially hamstring length⠀ - 🏉 have great strength and endurance of the posterior chain muscles; glutes, hamstrings and calves⠀ -🏉 have the endurance to last the season (injuries are more likely when you’re tired!)⠀ - 🏉 train the hamstring muscle in loads of different ways: open chain, closed chain, concentric, eccentric, isometric, plyometric, strength, endurance, motor control, compound movements, functional exercises etc.⠀ ⠀ Reference:⠀ Orchard, J., & Seward, H. Today we will review an alternative hip flexor strengthening exercise that’s performed lying on your back. This is a great alternative for individuals with 👇🏻 ❗️Poor balance ❗️Poor standing tolerance ❗️Would benefit from ⬆️ feedback from the ground . A correct version ✅ is demonstrated on the ⬆️(swipe twice for video). The individual should focus on keeping their core engaged to minimize low back movement. You want to isolate alternating hip flexion and extension while stabilizing the rest of the body. The green line represents the abs are engaged. I should be extending my hip fully on both sides but I don't, can you notice the difference? . An incorrect version ❌ is demonstrated on the ⬇️(swipe once for video). You can appreciate the lack of isolation at the hip joints in this demonstration compared to the other. The abs are not helping to stabilize the trunk, and the belly rising is an indication of the low back arching. . Sindrome Text Neck: Consiste in un insieme di sintomi e fastidi provocati dal guardare il display del tablet o dello smartphone continuamente e per un lungo periodo di tempo, mantenendo posizioni scorrette e nocive alla colonna vertebrale. In altri termini, un numero crescente di pazienti, in particolare giovani che non dovrebbero ancora avere problemi alla schiena e al collo, stanno invece segnalando dolori sia dovuti ad ernie del disco che a problemi di allineamento vertebrale della colonna - L'effetto peggiora “da seduti” Gli autori dell’articolo hanno spiegato che le persone spesso guardano dall'alto in basso quando utilizzano i loro smartphone, in particolare quando inviano un sms o durante la navigazione online o quando guardano un video. Precedenti studi hanno anche scoperto che durante queste attività con lo smartphone alcune persone tengono il collo a circa 45 gradi, e il tutto peggiora quando si siedono. L'impatto sulla colonna dorsale aumenta alle posizioni flesse più elevate, aggiungono. Mentre in una posizione neutra in attesa, la testa pesa circa da 10 a 12 libbre (4,5 – 5,4 Kg) quando ci si piega di 15 gradi, la testa peserà circa 27 chili. Lo stress sulla colonna vertebrale aumenta gradualmente e a 60 gradi, è di 60 chili. - Gli esperti spiegano cosa fare Gli autori suggeriscono dei semplici cambiamenti nello stile di vita per alleviare lo stress dovuto alla postura ‘text-neck’. Si consiglia di tenere i telefoni cellulari davanti al volto, o all'altezza degli occhi, mentre si sta guardando il display e di usare due mani e i due pollici per creare una posizione più simmetrica e confortevole per la colonna vertebrale. Al di là di utilizzo dello smartphone, i chirurghi spinali raccomandano che le persone che lavorano con un computer o sul tablet utilizzino un supporto del monitor elevato in modo che stiano seduti a livello degli occhi, il supporto dovrebbe essere orizzontale e chiaro. Infine si consiglia esercizi di stretching ed altri esercizi di base che si concentrano sulla postura per tenere sotto controllo la colonna. E di sdraiarsi sul letto estendendo il collo all'indietro per ripristinare l'arco normale nel collo.

LOW BAR VS HIGH BAR SQUAT🏋🏻 🔴Low bar squats are more popular in powerlifting, whereas high bar in Olympic lifters. Both have their benefits but which Is better?🤔 🔵Low bar squat involves bar being placed on rear delts and leads to a more folded over torso. It requires good shoulder and hip mobility, but very little ankle mobility. 🔴The high bar squat has the bar placed across the upper traps and leads to a more upright torso. It requires quite good ankle mobility (dorsiflexion) and decent hip mobility. 🔵The main aim of both types of squat is to have a bar path that is straight up and down. Both can accomplish this, but both the high bar and low bar have different benefits.💯 🔴The high bar squat is more suited to Olympic lifters as the upright torso mimics that of the starting position of a clean or snatch. Whereas, the low bar squat is suited best to those who are focussed on stronger hip musculature and pure strength (Glassbrook et al 2017). ✅ 🔵Ultimately you should look at your mobility and see which one you’re best suited to. If you can’t get into the low bar position due to poor shoulder mobility, take time to work on your mobility and continue high bar squatting in the meantime. If you can’t get into the high bar position due to poor ankle mobility work on it and continue low bar squatting.✅ 🔵Personally, I run cycles of both as both target different muscle groups, with high bar being more quad dominant and low bar being more posterior chain (glutes, hams) dominant. #tbt 2 years ago I broke my ankle. Fell off a barrier wall and landed on the inside of my ankle. Yep it was as painful as it looks. 4 weeks of no weight, 4 weeks of minimal weight and 2 months of physio.
