AN ISLAY UPDATE:
As you may have seen from @triplepdogs
' page, Islay has not been well. Last week she started to get a bit sick. Then she stopped eating, which for Islay, has never happened. Ever. I knew something was wrong. Into the vet right away and an X-ray showed swelling and a potential mass in her tummy. Ultrasound the next morning confirmed an enlarged liver and spleen, inflammation around the pancreas. Diagnosis of pancreatitis, which although she may have it reoccur we can keep on top of it with a strict low fat diet.
However, blood work also revealed that she has Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) which can be very serious if not treated in early stages. We hope to have caught it very early on.
She'll have to take large doses of prednisone over the course of the next four months. Unfortunately one of the major mortality risks for IMHA is developing a blood clot from the prednisone. Giving her a tiny dose of aspirin made by the vet will hopefully prevent this. She will need regular blood work done (tested today and has to go back Monday). If levels in her blood become too low (I can't remember exactly what they are measuring but normal is about 45 and she is at 22), one of the treatment options is blood transfusions. I am quite hopeful it will not get to that point. For now she is on four different medications to deal with both diseases, however she is not able to take regular pain medication like Metacam as it is contraindicated with the prednisone. Wish we could make the pain better.
She seems to have perked up a bit and is eating a little. She noticeably lost quite a bit of weight over the last couple days. And she's blowing her coat probably due to stress. And now that she does not feel well she is even crabbier than usual - Has anyone else ever dealt with IMHA? Would love to hear what others have experienced.
