Are laws, created in times of fear, really here to help us or to control our voices and actions?
New Zealand enacted anti-terrorism legislation post 911. It was protested that the small island was not a target and that this invasive law would be used against their own people. The government insisted that they would never use it in such a way.
A few years after its enactment, they indeed spent a great deal of time and money investigating #Maori
activists using exactly these laws to justify it. Homes were eventually raided, tossed upside down in front of children, and people were arrested. After much disruption and abuse, they did not find anything.
Teanau, father of young kids who works tirelessly for a variety of causes for the land and people, was one of them. Could something like that happen in the US? Elsewhere? Is it already happening? Many say yes.
It's our opportunity to stand in love and not to succumb to fear mongering. Of course there are people doing hurtful things out there, but all too often we are made to think that they are the majority and we need to give our rights away to be protected. We, the community, are the answer! Let's exercise our voices and sovereignty! Free speech is essential to a loving and balanced society! .
