📖 THE POWER av Naomi Alderman. Suddenly, every man on the planet finds they've lost control. The Day of the Girls has arrived - but where will it end?" ⠀ ⠀ INFO ⠀ ✔️Utgiven av Penguin Books @penguinbooks⠀ ✔️352 sidor ⠀ ✔️Vinnare av Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction @womensprize⠀ 👉🏻 #älskaromaner

Then this, Erskine Childers' 'The Riddle of the Sands' turned up. There weren't any sands where I was, so stones had to do. It was written in 1903, would you believe, and is one of the earliest novels in the espionage genre apparently. You'd never get away with calling your main man 'Carruthers' nowadays, eh? Says he, who has just begun a book where the guy's name is 'Evan Smoak.' This version seems to have been a freebie given away with The Times at some point and is a copy of an original-type Penguin version. I got it pointed in my direction by a list of the best ever spy novels which I'm working my way through getting hold of. Forza! #speeshreads
Curiosity level: Romantic, but a bit draggy (Pride and Prejudice still wins!) • “Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you.” - p. 222 • Anne Elliot is one of three daughters in a pompous family. Her dad, Sir Walter Elliot, is all about brawns and uh, not brains. Her sisters also aren’t very nice. So when poor but intelligent & likeable Frederick Wentworth (a sailor) asks for Anne’s hand in marriage, it’s no wonder that Sir Walter says nawww ("why’d have to be so rude?” I’m human too!”) • But things start to turn juicy when Frederick returns after 8 years… does the love rekindle? Or have circumstances altered the pair beyond repair? • I really like Anne Elliot. I find her calm, intelligent, self-assured persona intriguing - and how all those characteristics get turned inside out when she sees Frederick again after 8 years - she tries so hard to maintain composure, the way awkward love situations do to people. • • I also enjoy the hilarious pomposity of Anne’s family members (a caricature of the social system in England back in the day), but I found all the action sorely lacking till the last bits of the book. Many characters were thrown into the mix but none really stood out, and were quite distracting. Too many characters, in fact, with little value to the story :( • There was a feeling of inevitability; that somehow the end will be as I can imagine it to be - i can’t say what that is or i’ll be spoiling it. So it was a plodding all the way to the climatic end, I feel. • Sorry if you enjoyed this, Jane Austen fans, because while I did enjoy some parts, it was still a bit of a snooze-read. I’ve read “Pride and Prejudice” and enjoyed it dearly - but that was a long time ago. Time to re-read it for my module! • #bookreview #persuasion #janeausten #prideandprejudice #penguinclassics #anneelliot #anneelliotandcaptainwentworth #booksandflowers #bookstagram #artstagram #travelstagram #penguinbooks #whatareyoureading #whatareyoureadingsg #readingnationsg
