Had a great coversation with @rachel.hamiltonnn
yesterday about the kind of work we do as musicians... (and yes that inspired this post!)
Today my job is sitting in the park practising the cajon, some meetings later on, a photo shoot after, and some video editing tonight. So far i’ve relaxed and had coffee, been to the gym, and even attempted some shopping! So technically I’m starting work just after 12pm/lunchtime. I’ll also finish ‘work’ (the aforementioned activities), well after midnight tonight. .
So.. how do we judge what is successful, valuable or ‘work’ as a musician?
I think it simply revolves around the meaning most people give to ‘work’... .
I find it enjoyable to play the guitar and the cajon, so i do it everyday. Does this mean it isnt work as i’m not getting paid at the park right now AND i’m having fun? ...and if i didnt practise and have fun at the park playing these instruments, would i still get gigs?
Interested to hear your comments on this? Are work and fun mutually exclusive...? 🤔 And if you don’t get paid immediately from ‘work’ is it still ‘work’? 🤔 ...I know what I think!
P.S. T-shirt link in INSTA Bio 😉😝
