We have been hard at work scouting out a route that will appeal to everyone. We want to show participants the vast differences in Homewoods mixed use areas. You will see everything from the parks and recreational areas to the commercial and residential areas of Homewood during the tour. Some of the highlights include:
1. Westinghouse Park :: REGISTRATION :: 9:30am - 10:00am
The park land is the former estate of George Westinghouse, an American entrepreneur and engineer, and his wife Marguerite. With an area of about 10 acres, it was the site of his mansion known as Solitude. At this house, Westinghouse worked with his engineers, including Nikola Tesla, and entertained notable people of the day, including scientist William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), and congressman and later president William McKinley.
2. XFACTORY :: 10:15am - 11:45am
X-factory was built in the 1920s as a grocery warehouse, but now houses multiple businesses, including a fitness & health club, a non-profit technology company, an apparel producer, bio-fuel carburetor manufacturer, kombucha tea brewer, wine maker, guitar maker, dance choreographer, custom wood products manufacturer, ceramics producer. The mural, which was commissioned by the owner and painted by local artists in the summer of 2014, took more than 400 cans of spray paint to complete."
3. HOMEWOOD PLAYGROUND :: 11:15am - 11:45am
The pedestrian overpass leading to the Homewood Playground will have your creative ideas flowing while leading you to this playgound consisting of a baseball and sports field with a Homewood Mural as a backdrop.
4. Animal Resource Center :: 12:00 - 2:00pm
The Humane Animal Rescue invites you to join them after the walk for a FREE private photoshoot featuring Pittsburgh’s furriest models in need of forever homes.
