When you think of modern day #Sloths,
what's the first thing that comes to mind? Slow! They may be small today, but you could never imagine that their early #Ancestors
was as big as an #Elephant!
And his name was the #Megatherium.
They lived from around 5 million years ago, and went extinct only ~10,000 years ago! So our early ancestors likely came across these behemoths! This huge #Creature
is possibly the largest #Mammal
to have existed so far. Weighing in at a hefty 4 tons, and standing as high as 4 meters (20ft)! Thankfull these beasts were #Herbivores
(though some believe with it's large sharpe teeth and claws,it could of been #Carnivorous.
I think probably more scavenging than real hunting). Their #Fossils
have been found all over #SouthAmerica,
and some migrated up to #NorthAmerica.
They had very large claws on their forearms allowing them to reach higher branches of trees, and when necessary swipe at an attacker. And while they may have been slow like their modern cousins, they were very capaEvolution ghting off predators! I find these creatures fascinating because of how similar to modern sloths, but on a MUCH greater scale.
