The Horned God/Cernunnos
The Horned God is one of the two primary deities worshipped in Wicca and Neopaganism and is depicted as an anthropomorphic character. The Horned God represents the male part of Wicca's duotheistic theological system, while the Triple Moon Goddess represents the female aspect, or his counter. He is associated with nature, wilderness, sexuality, hunting, and the life cycle. Whilst depictions of the deity vary, he is always shown with either horns or antlers upon his head. The Horned God is an anthropomorphic deity, often depicted as being theriocephalic, in this way emphasizing "the union of the divine and the animal", the latter of which includes humanity.
The consort of the Goddess and symbol of male energy in the form of the divine, The Horned God reigns. He is the lord of the woodlands, the hunt and animals. He provides for the tribe through the hunt and is honored or rewarded for his deed by being permitted to copulate with the Goddess through the Great Rite. Doreen Valiente writes that the Horned God also carries the souls of the dead to the underworld.
The Horned God is the lord of life, death and the underworld, and is the Sun to the Goddess' Moon. He alternates with the Goddess in ruling over the fertility cycle of birth, death and rebirth. He is born at the winter solstice, unites with the Goddess in marriage at Bealtaine, and dies at the summer solstice to bring fertility to the land as the Sacred King.
The Horned God is the most popular representation, having been worshipped by early Wiccan groups such as the New Forest coven during the 1930s. The Horned God has been associated with many deities throughout the world such as the Greek God Pan, the Roman God Janus, the Celtic God Cernunnos, and even the lord of vegetation himself, The Green Man.
The Horned God is connected to the Sun and the forests, while it's counterpart, the Goddess, is especially connected to the Moon, stars and sea.
