Listening to some country music yesterday while riding with my buddy Zack, one of the songs he played was titled, #tenneseewhiskey
by the country artist name, #chrisstapleton.
I remember the song from seeing a performance by the artist and #JustinTimberlake
on the country music awards a while back. Back then while watching the show I couldn’t focus on the performance because something about the song sounded so familiar to me, and kept nagging at me. It’s hard to explain, but I’m sure those musically inclined will understand what I’m saying. It wasn’t until later last night while slipping into a deep snooze that it hit me. It snapped me back out of my sleep. I could hear #EttaJames
song, “I’d Rather Go Blind,” playing in my head. I then realized why the Chris Stapleton, “Tennessee Whiskeys,” song bothered me that day and yesterday.
I ask you all when you get the chance, listen to both songs and make your own judgments.
What’s even more irritating about this is, I searched and no where have I yet to see where Chris Stapleton gave her any credit or recognition for “BORROWING” the cadence, (is the main essence) of the song. And on top of that, they changed the genre from BLUES/R&B(Rhythm and Blues) to country just to hide it just so this country boy can claim originality. But this is nothing new. Our culture, art, creativity, invention, talent and swag is constantly “APPROPRIATED” by [OTHERS] with no appreciation or proper recognition at all. This is very whack and lame! Yet, they always praise, worship, award and give props to the [imposters] that resembles them. 😕
