I have this theory that the ends of the beach - the very most distant parts of a cove, where the stones peter out and the sea sweeps up against the towering cliff base - are far more interesting than the middle.
Today I wandered across a rainbow of rocks, all manner of greys, yellows, ochres, umbers, terracottas, pinks, greens, whites, and blues, and their scrunching under my boots was accompanied by the gentle wash of the ever-breaking waves.
I found mysterious patterns, rainbow lustre, glinting chips of mica, pink dense quartz, and nestled atop a pile of rocks as though it had been waiting for me, a most beautiful spiralling fossil.
I also finished an astonishing book, 'Mister God this is Anna', and if you have never read it, I can only recommend it. It doesn't hold with religion particularly, nor does its diminutive main character...but it explains SO MUCH in ways I felt really made a lot of sense.
Anna would have loved my rocks, the beach, and especially the fossil. Thanks Anna, for the teaching, and thanks Mister God for my wonderful afternoon.
