It was a momentous day at #Slum2School
today. One of their students Jolemu won 2nd place at the #LagosKidsMarathon.
Read what the founder of the charity organisation Otto Orondaam had to say about Jolemu below;
"So 2 years ago Jolemu dropped out of school because his father needed him to join him in #fishing
every morning. We were all sad & after several interventions over some months we were able to get him back to school. Gradually he started learning how to communicate & speak English.
He was good in other subjects but English still remained a problem so yesterday evening during their after-school #mentorship
class I asked them, which of you can run very well? He raised his hand. Hmmm. In my mind I was like, am I even sure he understands my question. So I asked again & he still raised his hand.
So we took him & a few others outside to run & he didn't do badly, so we asked them to come to school this morning so we could take them to participate in the marathon.
This morning the boys got to school by 6am but the girls hadn't come 1 hour later. Their guardians wanted them to do some house chores, so sadly, we had to go without them.
We all arived at the venue & hundreds of children from various schools across #Lagos
already kitted like they all came from Kenya & Tanzania. Our kids hadn't prepared so I felt intimidated but I still gave all of them some deep pep talks. Lol
And guess what! Jolemu came 2nd position in the 5km marathon. I felt So proud of him & all our other kids who got different medals & complementary gifts.
The lesson here is that every child is a #star.
We just need to find their light & let it shine. If they aren't good in maths they could be good be good in arts. If they aren't good in governance they could be great in dance. They all need a chance to shine their lights & someday they'll all shine bright if we never give up on them along the way." - @otto_orondaam
