"All Chichimecas, men, women, and children are warriors" — Fray Alonso. The Chichimecatl are Indigenous American people who inhabited the region called Gran Chichimeca north of the valley of Mexico were the Mexica Empire thrived at Tenochtitlan. The Chichimeca are an exceedingly misunderstood people, and even the Chichimeca name and identity is pervaded with Spanish, and Nahua mischaracterizations of who the Chichimeca were, for the Spanish, the word "Chichimeca" which they had gotten from the Mexica word Chichimecatl, carried connotations of barberism, and low civilization. For the Mexicas, Chichimecatl directly translated meant "Dog People" a reference to the Chichimeca's livelyhood as hunters, the way of dogs. However what many do not know is Chichimeca encompassed many Indigenous Mexican groups including the Pames, Otomis, Zacatecos, Tepehuenes, Guamaris, Guachachiles, and in another sense, the Mexicas themselves. The Mexica held a conception of themselves as Chichimeca, in so far as, for the Mexicas "Chichimeca" did not mean a barbaric nomad or a specific ethnic tribe, it meant the descedant of hunter gathers, and as part of the Mexica Migration Myth, the Mexicas would have considered themselves as the descendants of wanderers from Aztlán, who married into the Toltec lineage through marriage with the Culhuacan ruling elite, thus becoming legitimate heirs to the Toltec Civilization. Chichimeca heritage was a central component of the Mexicas conception of their origin, and the concept of being a Chichimeca; a descendant of wanderers, unified the diverse groups of Indigenous Americans who migrated into the Central valley of Mexico to form the Mexica Civilization, perhaps today all members of the Mexican diaspora, on both sides of the border could unify their identity with a similar conception of themselves as the descedants of wanderers."
