Polar Patterns on #Microphones
are very useful creative tools.
Every microphone has a polar pattern. Some microphones can even switch between several polar patterns. The 3 main polar patterns are Cardioid, Bidirectional/Figure 8, and Omnidirectional.
This is important to know, because each of these polar patterns are meant to be used as tools to help focus, or isolate sounds, differently.
Cardioid pick up pattern allows you to mainly pick up sounds directly in front of the mic, while ignoring sounds directly behind it.
Bidirectional/Figure 8 pick up pattern allows you to pick up sounds directly in front and directly behind the mic, while ignoring sounds on either of its sides.
Omnidirectional pick up pattern, as the name suggests, picks up sounds 360 degrees around it.
Knowing which of your microphones has these polar patterns can be a useful creative tool used to focus on specific sounds, or ignore other sounds, when recording. If you have a microphone that switches between these polar patters, it will change its frequency response slightly, which means you’ll get a slightly different sound between each of the patterns.
Happy recording everyone!
