| 14 | Connemara Public Library (Old Library Building), Part-2/2
Madras has a strong cultural history of emphasizing on education and the arts. Dotted with extremely renowned universities and spaces for learning, it’s no surprise that Connemara library has been established here, along with a few other really old libraries. I was humbled to be able to visit this library. There is something about visiting old buildings that haven’t yet lost its old world charm, especially with brilliant architecture that I fall super hard for. Just think about all the people gone in time that we are sharing that space and experience with!
The old building of Connemara is a stunning solace in magnificence to say the least. This is the kind of library I want to be coup-ed in with its intricate teak woodwork, colorful floral murals and stained glass panels. The library has narrow spiral staircases that lead up to the mezzanine level of the library where the change in scale with dazzling lighting puts us in some kind of dream space. Aging gracefully at 121 years while staying timeless, this is one of the most beautiful spaces I have been in. I can assure you that if I sit by the stained glass window and start reading something, I am not about to move for hours!
It’s oddly funny when I think about how I am getting to see this building now and not earlier. While I have always been the kind who celebrated Madras and tried going through her nooks and crannies, I am pushing myself this time round. These MiniSketches are helping me close chapters and establish new memories in ways I am borderline proud of. I just want to tell y’all that every city is a treasure trove (Madras more than others) and sometimes, it’s really great to give yourself a break and explore your own city in a way you haven’t really done before. There are hidden nuggets all around. ‘There’s Treasure Everywhere (C&H)’. :) A special shoutout and thanks to the old building librarian in-charge Mr. Kumaravel and his staff who allowed me access to the place, showed me binding press nooks and even the foundation stone of the building from 1896!
