Seven score and fourteen years ago today Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was asked to deliver a "few appropriate remarks" to dedicate the National Cemetery at Gettysburg. Lincoln's address contained 270 words in only 10 sentences and was delivered in under two minutes yet it remains as one of the most famous and powerful speeches in US history. 🇺🇸"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. #OnThisDay in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was just four and half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. This speech was and still is considered one of the greatest and most influential statements of national purpose. In just two minutes, Lincoln reiterated the principals of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed the Civil War as a struggle for the preservation of the Union which, with “a new birth of freedom” would bring true equality to all its citizens.
