Last summer on a rainy day in India, I picked up this book from a small used bookstore. It was the first book I ever read about the Middle East (somewhat fittingly I began with ancient history first), and I was fascinated by the travel narrative of an art historian journeying through the lands of old empires and religions. I took this picture on a train when I had just gotten to the part where the author arrives in Egypt. On that day, I had no idea I’d be arriving in Egypt just three months later. Serendipity, chance, coincidence, grace. I don’t know which one it is, but this is how I’m learning to trust.
