❤️ OXYTOCIN = THE HORMONE OF LOVE ❤️
As parents, we need to have a lot of patience and self control. Acts of compassion and displays of kindness and empathy are necessary if we want them to survive and thrive as teens and young adults in the world today. .
Yet, as parents, we often struggle to find those virtues ourselves, when lacking sleep and stressed out, we are pushed to the limit during the most important years of our children's lives. .
Research shows that it is in the first four years of a child's life when the building blocks for empathy are created. It is not just a skill or learnt behaviour that happens in adulthood. The brain develops EMPATHY when certain neurons in the brain called a 'spindle neurons' grow and connect - taking only 4 years to mature to adult density. .
This small window of opportunity is of immense importance. These years of early childhood development is the optimal time when to give our children emotional intelligence. Most parents expect rearing kids to be a happy experience, but not all young people would have the support or skills to enable them to best care for their kids. Can we teach empathy if we don't know how to regulate our own emotions? .
Children whose parents have a strong bond of love, and healthy relationships, have less chance of mental illness one day. Mirror neurons within a child's brain reflects and produce oxytocin - the hormone of love - thanks to the love and care of insightful and emotionally intelligent parents. .
Education, awareness and a world wide understanding about the need to understand emotional intelligence today, will prevent mental illness and disease in our society tomorrow. I believe this neurological research is the preventative medicine that all societies needs for our children to lead happy, healthy and harmonious lives. Change is possible and new skill can be learnt. Let's help our kids feel AWESOME and be the change we wish to see in the world!
