Here's how the morning began....
I pick up my last 2 guests at the @sawridgejasper
hotel and as we pull out of the driveway heading out on an adventure up the Maligne Valley, this beautiful black bear is heading into the hotel. Now don't get me wrong, the Sawridge is a great hotel, one of my personal faves, with excellent, welcoming staff but this fella would not be the ideal guest. So, I push him back across the road. Keeping abreast of him, we use the vehicle to walk him eastwards out of town and he's shooting us sideways glances all the while.
As he's ambling east, a couple of joggers are heading west towards him. They see what's happening and come running across the road. They're Australian. This isn't the norm on their morning run.
I call Parks and tell them where the bear is. I keep working him east. After blasting the horn, this big fella heads up the tree. He's done with me and the way I hoped he'd go is now semi blocked by onlookers.
Parks Canada arrives and takes control of the situation. The crowd disperses and he gets moved back into the woods away from town.
My guests are ecstatic! Who wouldn't be?
There are bears about good people.
Be mindful. Be respectful. Don't be fearful.
Be Bear Aware!
Carry Pepper Spray and call Parks Canada if a situation is evolving. Most of the time these gentle giants just want to be left to do their thing. Town isn't really the best place for that. But that's what happens sometimes when you put a town in the middle of the best habitat in the Rockies.
Like this if you read it all and didn't just look at the pictures. 😜
