Jeru the Damaja | D. Original
Single Cover by DH.
I love going back to my early work as I put together my Retrospective for my Photography book. I was 23 years old, full of ideas.. I'm close to 50 now, still full of ideas but in a more complex medium, "cinema". See, when you are a creative, your brain never stops. You can start your career in photography and evolve to making movies like me. Or you can start in music and evolve to Photography like Jeru and D-Nice (I love for these two brothers to do a portrait of me one day. wink wink). Or you can start in acting and end in painting like Jim Carey. Or you can stay doing the art that you love and do it forever and evolve into master your discipline.
In fact, I don't think it never ends for us. Look at Celia Cruz, she told me one time that she was going to work until she dies on stage, and she practically did. How beautiful is that. You keep creating until life ends.
The first time I worked with Jeru.
No big production team, No Record Company Team. Just me Jeru and my camera and an assistant. I loved his nick name. "The Damaja", That sounded to me like he was coming to set sbit on fire!!! And his music did just that. A few minutes after this Image I shot the image for #thesunrisesintheeast
Shot with the Hasselblad, slow shutter speed and strobe.
I bought like 10 flares. The kind you use when you have a car accident and I put them all around him under the Brooklyn Bridge.
I left the shutter speed open for like half a second. Those wiggly lines in the background are the lights of the city. The result was this firey red overcast all over the image. That of course I didn't get to see until I processed the film. I had no Polaroids then.
