filming is fully done! Can't wait to get all this footage edited and ready for the world. If you've been under a rock for the past month and a bit, here's what's up: three brilliant black British African poets and I have been busy having our mothers translate our work into their first languages, then getting into a studio and filming the results. Collectively, we are Shona, Yoruba, Igbo and Ga, and when I tell you the music of these languages you wouldn't believe me till you hear it. The direction of the translation (out of English, not into) is deliberate. The love with which these poets and their mothers have engaged with this project has been stunning. I'm grateful to have had their help in manifesting the kind of art that we need to see in the world. Also grateful to the folks who told me to follow my awe and go get the Arts Council lettuce for this baby, you know who you are and what you mean to me. To @autographabp
for partnering and believing in this. And then to @elliotbulley
for lending the professional tech know-how to my vision and giving it legs (hire them). Here's to more in the future. Until then, editing...
And also much love. #filmmaking #indigenous #africanliterature #blackwomen #blackbritishartists #wocartists #artscouncilengland #language #translation #poetry #international
