Monks Mound in Cahokia State Historic Site. This is the 2,200 acre site of a pre-Colombian Native American city located near Collinsville, Illinois. This state historic site originally contained around 120 human-created earthen mounds.Today, nearly 80 mounds exist, including the massive monks mound which covers nearly 14 acres at the base, and stands 100 feet tall. In AD 1150, 10,000 to 20,000 Native American Indians lived at and around Cahokia Mounds, making it larger than many European cities at the time. #nativeamericanindiansite #indianmounds #thechandlersroute66adventures #route66 #illinois66 #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin

The old Macoupin County "Cannonball Jail" was built using the "cannonball "method, which prevented your breaks by making it virtually impossible to escape by removing the blocks. This method consisted of hallowing out the ends of each stone, then placing surplus civil war cannon balls between the stones to lock them together. The ceilings, walls, and floors were constructed of 1 inch iron plates with 20 inches of solid stone. This medieval-inspired, Gothic Revival designed jail was in operation for 119 years-from 1869 to 1988. #cannonballjail #illinois66 #illinois #route66 #historicroute66 #thechandlersroute66adventures #roadtrippin #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #jails

Another of the 3 Illinois Giants. Piece of trivia: In 2006, a tornado that went through the Springfield area, blew off the Lauterbach giant's head. Yes, there is actually a phone booth sitting on top of the Lincoln City Hall. It was originally placed there in 1960s to provide shelter for firemen who were acting as severe weather spotters. The booths pay-phone was replaced with a phone with a direct line to the fire station. In 2009, the city planned on removing it from the roof, but the towns citizens asked that it remain on the roof for its historic and unique value. It still stands on the roof today, but is not open to tourists for safety reasons. #phonebooth #route66 #illinois66 #illinois #lincolnillinois #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin #thechandlersroute66adventures

One of the three Illinois Giants. This 19-foot tall Bunyan Giant was originally located in front of a hotdog stand called "Bunyon's" in Cicero, Illinois. This is another "Muffler Man" statue that has bee customized to hold a hotdog instead of an axe. It stood at the hotdog stand from 1965 to 2003, when the stand closed. It was originally placed on top of the building, but later moved to the front door, where patrons would walk under the legs to enter the business. In 2004, the statue was donated to the Illinois Route 66 Association. After restoration, it was place in Atlanta, Illinois where he still stands on Route 66. #bunyongiant #roadtrippin #roadtrip #ontheroadagain #thechandlersroute66adventures #illinois #illinois66 #route66 #iconicroute66statue

This sharp, 90-degree curve on Historic Route 4, which became 66 in the 1940s, was the cause of many accidents from 1926 to 1959, due to drivers misjudging the curve. At only 18-feet wide, the road had to handle 2-way traffic. There were so many accidents at this curve that Illinois State Police dubbed it "Dead Mans Curve." PS Scott got a wee bit upset as it took us about 5 tries to get this video. He wasn't happy that we were just driving in circles. #roadtrippin #deadmanscurve #roadtrip #thechandlersroute66adventures #burmashavesigns #ontheroadagain #route66 #illinois66 #illinois #towandaillinois
