Monks Mound in Cahokia State Historic Site. This is the 2,200 acre site of a pre-Colombian Native American city located near Collinsville, Illinois. This state historic site originally contained around 120 human-created earthen mounds.Today, nearly 80 mounds exist, including the massive monks mound which covers nearly 14 acres at the base, and stands 100 feet tall. In AD 1150, 10,000 to 20,000 Native American Indians lived at and around Cahokia Mounds, making it larger than many European cities at the time. #nativeamericanindiansite #indianmounds #thechandlersroute66adventures #route66 #illinois66 #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin
Walking on the Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi River. The Chain of Rocks Bridge carried travelers over the Mississippi river between Illinois and Missouri from 1936 until 1955. The bridge was originally privately built as a toll bridge in 1929 at a cost of $2.5 million. The bridge is 5,353-feet in length, 93-feet high, and has a 22ยฐ bend in the middle. The 40-foot roadway is nearly 60 feet above the water. #thechandlersroute66adventures #bridges #route66 #illinois #illinois66 #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin

The old Macoupin County "Cannonball Jail" was built using the "cannonball "method, which prevented your breaks by making it virtually impossible to escape by removing the blocks. This method consisted of hallowing out the ends of each stone, then placing surplus civil war cannon balls between the stones to lock them together. The ceilings, walls, and floors were constructed of 1 inch iron plates with 20 inches of solid stone. This medieval-inspired, Gothic Revival designed jail was in operation for 119 years-from 1869 to 1988. #cannonballjail #illinois66 #illinois #route66 #historicroute66 #thechandlersroute66adventures #roadtrippin #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #jails
On the north side of Carlinville, Illinois, you'll find a neighborhood of mail-order houses that were purchased from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. The 12-block neighborhood is called the "Standard Addition." It contains 152 Sears Homes, which is the largest contiguous collection of Sears Homes in the United States. This neighborhood was born in 1918, when the Standard Oil Company needed housing for its mine workers. #mailorderhouses #thechandlersroute66adventures #route66 #historicroute66 #roadtrip #roadtrippin #ontheroadagain #illinois #illinois66
We traveled on a couple of original stretches of the 1926-30 alignment of Route 66, and we had to drive about as fast as this critter goes. #historicroute66 #illinois66 #route66 #thechandlersroute66adventures #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin #slowgo
In the 1920s, this section of Route 66 was being poured. While being cured, a wild turkey came out of the fields and left his footprints in what would later become the most famous road in the world. #turkeytracks #ontheroadagain #route66 #illinois66 #roadtrippin #roadtrip #thechandlersroute66adventures
Another of the 3 Illinois Giants. Piece of trivia: In 2006, a tornado that went through the Springfield area, blew off the Lauterbach giant's head. It was located down the street and reattached. #route66icon #illinois66 #illinois #route66 #thechandlersroute66adventures #roadtrip #ontheroadagain #roadtrippin #illinoisgiants
I am happy! Ate lunch at the Cozy Dog Drive-In, where the corn dog originated. It is not called a corn dog here, though. You gotta call it a Cozy Dog. #thechandlersroute66adventures #illinois66 #route66 #illinois #cozydog #roadtrip #ontheroadagain #roadtrippin
Yes, there is actually a phone booth sitting on top of the Lincoln City Hall. It was originally placed there in 1960s to provide shelter for firemen who were acting as severe weather spotters. The booths pay-phone was replaced with a phone with a direct line to the fire station. In 2009, the city planned on removing it from the roof, but the towns citizens asked that it remain on the roof for its historic and unique value. It still stands on the roof today, but is not open to tourists for safety reasons. #phonebooth #route66 #illinois66 #illinois #lincolnillinois #ontheroadagain #roadtrip #roadtrippin #thechandlersroute66adventures
