They can be separated into two groups: intracapsular and extracapsular. ... There is one intracapsular ligament, the ✔ ligament of the head of the femur (seen in the inside view image above ☝️). It can also be known as the foveal ligament or the ligamentum teres femoris. It is a small triangular shape ligament and articulates the acetabular fossa with the fovea of the femur. This ligament encloses the acetabular branch of the obturator artery, which is a minor source of arterial supply to the hip joint ❤ ... There are three extracapsular ligaments: ✔ iliofemoral ligament - articulates the anterior inferior iliac spine and the intertrochanteric line of the femur. It is a Y shaped ligament and helps to prevent hyperextension of the hip joint. ✔ pubofemoral ligament - articulates the superior pubic rami and the intertrochanteric line of the femur. It is a triangular shape ligament and helps to prevent excessive abduction and extension. ✔ ischiofemoral ligament - articulates the ischium and the greater trochanter of the femur. It consists of a strong band of triangular fibres and helps to prevent excessive extension. ... Another structure that aids with stabilising the hip joint is the ✔ acetabular labrum. Similar to the labrum of the shoulder, that we looked at last week (see a few posts back for more info 👍) the labrum of the hip is a circular layer of cartilage which surrounds the outer part of the acetabulum.
