Note from my husband-
I have a lesson for my kids out of this. When I went on leave during my tour of Iraq I flew into Houston, TX where we were greeted by fire trucks spraying water over the plane as we pulled into the terminal. It was an amazing thing to be part of. Once inside the terminal we all had to go to customs. When I left customs there was door upon opening the door....keep in mind there was about 60-70 soldiers with me....we entered into a hallway that was packed with people of all ages. They let out a huge cheer. We were handed all kinds of things like phone cards, bibles, other inspirational/motivational things. Then kids came up to me and asked me for my autograph. Wow! Me? Why ME? Why not wait outside some stadium and get an athletes signature. I mean you see them all the time on TV. Fancy cars. Oh well I guess. I signed some and headed for my flight. For years I have thought about that day. Ran it over in my head and the conclusion I have came to is that a real hero doesn't need to be on TV. Doesn't need to have millions of dollars. Why can't a real hero be your neighbor? Your co-worker? Your Boss? Your best friend? Those little kids wanted my autograph. 1 of 60 or 70 soldiers walking around in an airport. Maybe just maybe if we align ourselves to see through their eyes we all would be better off. So here is where the lesson for my children comes in. I bought a University of Washington flag. I have it hanging in my room and I am asking all of my heroes to autograph it. Those heroes include my doctors, the nurses, and anyone that has helped me during one of the darkest times in my life. I know I will be a University of Washington fan forever. I hope to take that flag and hang it on the wall at our house as a reminder to me and my family who real heroes are. They are the people who help other people everyday never asking for anything in return . These are the people that I am thankful for. That I am here because of. Go Huskies!
