Most people believe that sharks are mindless killing machines...
The reality is, under 10 humans are killed by sharks per year, but HUMANS KILL 100 MILLION sharks per year!
That’s about 12,000 per hour!
As a mermaid I am always asked "aren't you scared of sharks?" and I had to admit that originally... Yes, I was. But once I started actually interacting with them, my fear changed to awe and respect.. and then enjoyment! They are magnificent, impressive animals, smart and curious.
Humans are not on their preferred menu.. shark attacks are usually the cause of mistaken identity or a curiosity bite.
What I witnessed when interacting with tiger sharks was astounding to me. Of all the animals I’ve connected with in the ocean, they were the ONLY ones who constantly approached to be touched and even seemed to enjoy being tickled on the nose! I’m not suggesting that everyone go and try to pet a shark… They ARE wild apex predators, and I was with a group of trained professionals, but what this experience taught me is that we have been misled in our perception of these animals.
