🌡Thursday Theory: The Galilean Thermometer. Swipe for more. Not invented by Galileo, but inspired by his observation that the density of a liquid is inversely proportional to its temperature, this functional piece of art was quite a conversation piece at dinner last night. The first and third videos in this post are time lapses; the device works so lazily it is sometimes referred to in Italian as a slow thermometer (termometro lento). The fluid inside this thermometer is not water but likely an alcohol like ethanol and the bulbs are filled with colored water. The ethanol is more susceptible to temperature changes than the water and thus density changes. As the temperature of the room rises, so does the temperature of the ethanol. The tags beneath the bulbs dictate the weight of each piece which in relation to their volume determines their density. In accordance with Galileo's principle, as the temperature increases, the decrease in density of the surrounding fluid causes the mass of the bulbs to overcome the buoyant force of the ethanol, causing a drop of the bulb. There are two ways to read the thermometer. If the bulbs are separated, the average of the lowest upper bulb and highest lower bulb is taken to arrive at the temperature. If a bulb itself is floating between the high and low bulbs, its tag indicates the room temperature. The fourth image is a diagram showing 76 degrees on the left and 70 degrees on the right. I really enjoy practical science and this easy-going thermometer would make a great educational addition to any family room. Now to find one of my own...🌡🤓➕➖✖️➗ . . . #temperature #thermal #temp #fahrenheit #celcius #thermometer #bulbs #fluid #liquid #water #art #physics #science #functionalart #functional #galileo #galilean #lento #slowyourroll #slow #timelapse #thermo #thermodynamics #tb #tbt #thursday #thursdays

@Regranned from @nasa - Shadowed by the grandeur of Jupiter ( @nasajuno), two of the planet’s largest moons – Io and Europa – are seen here in this image captured by our Juno spacecraft on Sept. 1. At the time the image was taken, the spacecraft was about 17,098 miles from the cloud tops of the planet. Closer to the planet, the Galilean moon of Io can be seen.
