Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did." —Proverbs 24:29 (NIV)
I hid the last piece of apple pie in the back of the refrigerator only to come back late... and find it gone.
The family hadn't known I had big plans for that slice of pie -- someone just found my sugar-sweet, gluten-free-cheating pie secret hidden behind a cache of vegetables. And they stole it. Stole it. And ate it. And ruined my planned moment of bliss.
This verse is a big old dose of real, y'all. And I'm dancing around it with a little pie drama, but the truth is -- extending forgiveness when we've been wronged is HUGE. Whether intentional or not, the consequences of what is done to us can sometimes be life-altering. (Okay. Totally unlike pie.) And those hurts are the most difficult to lay down.
this week is not what comes to mind when we read this verse. AMOUR? What's love got to do with forgiveness? Brokenness.? Hurt and loss and pain? It's because the photo here -- whether we're in a romantic, spousal relationship or other -- resisting the payback mentality means we love when it's the most difficult. We love when it's the one person we don't want to love. We love when we're hurt. And broken. And 100% sure we're in the right. (Which, we're probably not, by the way.) We love, give love, receive love, and walk in love along this life's journey, because it's what Christ first did for us.
It may not be as simple as apple pie (Oh, why can't life be that simple?), but maybe we can use this mid-week to reach out to someone. Just one person. Tell them you forgive them. Shine the spotlight on love instead of holding to any darkness that was the root of the hurt in our lives. And maybe, we'll find that love is the reward. We'll give it, receive it, walk in it, and find the freedom we've been looking for all along.
It takes one call. One text. One hand-written letter in the mail to say: "I love you", despite anything else. Make it an anthem of amour today. ;) #WednesdayWisdom #AMOUR #love #forgive #forgiveness #freedom
