Is alignment important in yoga? Definitely, and it still plays a huge part in my own practice and my teaching. I also love the structure of the ashtanga practice, knowing exactly what's coming next, leaving me free to focus on my breath, bandhas, and yes, proper alignment. However, lately I've been feeling that my body wants to move more freely at times and not worry too much about engaging the right muscles or have the correct drishti, just go with the flow and move spontaneously. It felt conflicting at the beginning, my mind creating resistance to free movement and fear of getting injured. Then I realised it's not either/or, I can still have my structured practice in the morning and then flow freely later in the day, more like dancing to the beat of my heart and the sound of my breath, letting go of my usual rigour and surrender to the rhythm of the music. As usual, yoga sets me free of my conditioning and teaches me to trust and listen to my inner voice.
