Say hello to another adorable animal featured for this week’s endangered animal awareness post! This is the Borneo Pygmy Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) 🐘. These elephants are much smaller than other elephant species, and are often referred to as “baby-faced” as they look like calves all throughout their lives. The major threats to elephant species are habitat loss and poaching. Pygmy elephants are considered endangered as their population has decreased by 50% over the last 3 years, and now only consists of 1000-1500 individuals.
Ellen DeGeneres has recently started a Be Kind to Elephants campaign, in which she will make a donation to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (one of the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation programs) every time someone reposts or retweets the logo for this campaign with the hashtag #BeKindToElephants.
So, check out this great organization and post away!
