Happy belated Earth Day!
I spent yesterday (and the last 3 weeks) witnessing one of Earth's most unique birds: Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse. While lesser known than the larger Sage Grouse, these small grouse are just as noteworthy. Breeding season is in full swing, meaning that the males gather together in areas called leks where they try to win over the ladies with some rad dance moves. These boys spread their wings, fan their tails, and perform a dance meant to dazzle. While dancing, the males also produce motor-like and popping sounds by rattling their tail feathers and deflating purple air sacs on their necks, making for both a aural and visual performance. As males stomp their feet and dance, hens carefully observe which is best and worthy of her choosing.
These birds are a reminder that the earth is home to some extraordinary creatures. Preserving the places and life that make this planet a more interesting and healthy place to live will take an effort from everyone. -
