Very happy to finally share some summer work. Photographed car salesmen and mechanics in New Jersey. Major thanks to all involved parties. Special thanks to Maggie for jumping in as my assistant!
I am photographing American social (and otherwise) groups. I am very interested in record, and how history will perceive us. I photograph the current, the future, and the those social groups and professions which may disappear in an increasingly automated, and wealth-unequal world. My work contains an inherent anxiety, and awkwardness.
Of great importance to any work claiming to be encyclopedic is inclusion. The work thus far is almost entirely white men living and working in solidly middle class areas, in the generally affluent north-east region of the U.S. I am not denying this, and I’m not proud of it. However, I believe it is of note that all the groups I’ve found are entirely racially segregated. The fact that one needs to make a specific effort to find racial integration in 2017 is a worthy note in and of itself. I’m working on it. . . .
