As I sit here staring at this little wonder chatting I can't help to think of how lucky I am and how privileged we both are.
I hope she always checks her privilege. I hope she fully understands how privileged she is. For her white skin...for English as her dominant language...for being born into a country people dream of being a citizen of...for being born into a middle class family... in a progressive city. I hope she realizes all her choices are not choices that everyone has the privilege of having. That her hard work may get her further ahead than others working harder. I hope she understands not all parents like hers understands our privilege of choice. Choice of schools. Of where to live. Of how to navigate systems. School systems. Government systems. Social systems. And how that navigational tool puts her into even more privilege. I hope she understands the complexity and richness of being able to grow up in a place full of differences. Cultural...language...race...sexuality...gender...and that those differences are BEAUTIFUL!!! Most of all, I hope she is always brave enough to stand on the side of the oppressed and never the oppressor. ✊
P.S. she'll totally understand - she'll never hear the end of it. 😂
