Fear and Focus.
“You can conquer almost any fear if you will only make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind.” – Dale Carnegie
A spectacular spot on the upper Hornli Ridge of the Matterhorn is the ideal place to make this point about focus and fear. It’s an amazing locale: a razor’s edge with drop offs of 3500 feet on both sides of you, and within view of the summit. It’s actually not that difficult of a pitch; almost like a ladder with firm holds for hand and feet easy enough for a beginner really. But the exposure! The need to make every step and handhold without error. The potential for distraction is great—as is the possibility for paralyzing fear—by looking around, or down, and realizing how precarious a spot you occupy.
The way around this is focus. The kind of focus you develop layer by layer, through practice, experience, training, and testing your skills, again and again, until you not only are confident in your body skills but your mental discipline.
Everything you attempt to do works better, gets easier, and is more fun when you learn to control your fear.
